Euphausiid Predation on Larval Anchovy at Two Contrasting Sites off California Determined with an Elispot Immunoassay

چکیده

Evidence supporting the occurrence of starving larval fish in the ocean was mainly circumstantial (May, 1974; Jones and Hall, 1974: Lasker, 1975) until recently, when the presence of starving ocean-caught larval northern anchovy, Engraulis mordax, was documented using histological criteria (O'Connell, 1980). Subsequently, using similar criteria, Theilacker (1986) quantified starvation-induced mortality for ocean-caught larval jack mackerel, Trachurus synnnetricus, and showed that starvation was a significant source of mortality for first-feeding fish.

Contrasting years in the Gironde estuary (Bay of Biscay, NE Atlantic) springtime outflow and consequences for zooplankton pyruvate kinase activity and the nutritional condition of anchovy larvae: an early view

A major spawning ground of the European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) population in the Bay of Biscay is located near the mouth of the Gironde estuary. Variations in the river discharge affect the supply of nutrients to the coastal marine area encompassing anchovy spawning grounds. Two “Pegase” cruises (May–June 1997 and 1998) observed two contrasting situations: with and without a superfici...

Explaining advection: do larval bay anchovy (Anchoa mitchilli) show selective tidal-stream transport?

Bay anchovy (Anchoa mitchilli) have been reported in several systems to display net up-estuary larval movements, against the mean flow. However, the means by which such transport occurs is poorly understood. We address how estuarine circulation and larval behaviors serve to transport larvae of the bay anchovy. In two successive summer seasons, we conducted multiple near-synoptic samples of larv...

The spatial distribution of euphausiid aggregations in the Northern California Current during August 2000

The location and size of euphausiid aggregations (patches) were identified using acoustic volume backscattering strength at 38 and 120 kHz and vertically stratified MOCNESS sampling during a US GLOBEC cruise off southern Oregon and northern California in August 2000. Euphausiid patches were clustered inshore of Heceta Bank (44.01N) and off Cape Blanco (42.81N), but were not common elsewhere. Th...

Invasive African clawed frogs in California: A reservoir for or predator against the chytrid fungus?

Amphibian species are experiencing population declines due to infection by the fungal pathogen, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd). The African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis), an asymptomatic carrier of Bd, has been implicated in the spread of this pathogen through global trade and established invasive populations on several continents. However, research has not explored the relationships of bot...

Mass mortality of krill caused by parasitoid ciliates.

Euphausiids, commonly known as krill, often dominate pelagic crustacean productivity of the world’s oceans. The ecology of these crustaceans has been extensively studied, but sources of mortality remain poorly understood. Predation and starvation are traditionally assumed to be the most important causes of death; however, little attention has been given to the identification of other sources of...
